Leading
Against a trump contract
- lead a short suit (singleton) (only if you expect to later make ruffs)
- Only lead an ace if you also have the king
- Start with the highest card of a series (for instance the K from KQJx)
- Leading a low card is encouraging. It promises a high card in that suit:
- Do not lead low from the ace or the king, that is usually costly
- Example:
- Qxxx -> lead your lowest
- Kxxx -> choose another suit to lead from!
- Never start under your king!
- Start with the 'top of nothing' i.e. your highest card from a suit in which you hold no high cards:
- Example:
- xxx -> start top card
Against NT contract
- Lead your longest suit
- Did partner bid a suit? Then lead that suit!
